Motorsports: Falk wins 100-lap feature at Langley
Provided by Langley's Gary Daughtrey:
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA Med Express Urgent Care Night Race Recap Saturday, July 18, 2009 HAMPTON, Va. (July 18) -- C.E. Falk overcame an afternoon engine change and scored his sixth win of the season in the Med Express Urgent Care 100 for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars, the featured event of Saturday evening's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Langley Speedway. Danny Edwards Jr. bagged the pole position, lapping the .395-mile oval at 87.282 mph. Greg Edwards was second-fastest, only nine-thousandths of a second off his brother's pace. Falk, limited to just a few practice laps on his new powerplant, was third. Matt Waltz and Woody Howard lined up fourth and fifth, respectively. As the race got under way, Danny Edwards Jr. motored into the lead, beating Greg Edwards to Turn 1. Greg dropped in line on his brother's bumper. Falk, Howard and Mark Wertz emerged from the opening shuffle in third, fourth and fifth. The first caution flag waved on lap 8 when Waltz and Paul DeBolt tangled in Turn 2 and Waltz spun. Both drivers were deployed to the back of the pack. On the restart, the top eight drivers bolted nose-to-tail. Things got stretched out, though, as Howard and Wertz began a protracted tussle for fourth place. Meanwhile, Falk slipped around Greg Edwards for second place on lap 12. The exchange allowed Danny Edwards Jr. to pad his lead to five car-lengths. As the laps clicked off, Falk closed in, little by little, on the leader. At the crossed flags, he had whittled Danny Edwards Jr.'s advantage to just two lengths. The second, and what would turn out to be the final, caution flag flew on lap 58. With cars skating around off Turn 4, officials decided to throw the yellow to take a closer look at the corner. When the race resumed, Falk wasted no time in going after the lead, ducking under Danny Edwards Jr. in Turns 1 and 2. Falk remained on Edwards' inside flank until lap 67 when Edwards cleared him and pulled away by two lengths. Falk took three laps to cool his tires and collect himself, then launched another bid for the lead on lap 70. He drove under Edwards off Turn 2 and gained the clear-cut edge off Turn 4. Just three laps later, Falk had already fashioned a three-length margin. Edwards' final shot at Falk came on lap 83 as the leader slowed to work past a lapped machine and Edwards closed the gap to little more than a car-length. That was a close as Edwards would get, however, as Falk eased away in the waning circuits to win by 0.863-second -- about four lengths. Greg Edwards tailed the lead duo to the line, in third, followed by Wertz and Casey Wyatt. Paul DeBolt was sixth to the stripe, while Dean Shiflett, Howard, Shawn Balluzzo and Jeff Shiflett completed the top 10, all finishing on the lead lap. Mark Claar took the lead on lap 29 and rolled to his first victory of the year in the 40-lap Old Point National Bank Grand Stock race. Jammie Goode started on the pole, at 78.812 mph, and led the first 16 circuits. Goode pulled off to a half-straightaway advantage in the early going, only to see Ricky Derrick narrow the distance. At the completion of lap 16, Goode suddenly dropped off the pace and Derrick flashed past. As Goode exited Turn 2 on lap 17, his engine erupted in a cloud of white smoke, spelling an early end to his night. Back under green, Derrick gained a slim edge over Anthony Kincaid and Claar. Claar grabbed second from Kincaid on lap 23, while Derrick widened his lead to four lengths. The second caution flag flew on lap 26. As the race resumed, Derrick and Claar bolted from the pack in nose-to-tail formation. Claar stalked Derrick until the end of lap 28 when he ducked under the leader off Turn 4. Claar was up by half a car-length at the end of lap 29, then cleared Derrick off Turn 2 on lap 30 to gain the clear-cut advantage. The last yellow flag appeared on lap 32. On the final restart, Claar quickly opened a two-length lead over Derrick, who closed back in through Turns 1 and 2. Over the waning circuits, Claar gradually increased his lead, winning by three lengths. Derrick was the runner-up, followed by Kincaid, Bobby Spivey and Robbie Parker. With Goode's 13th-place finish, Derrick has taken over the division points lead by eight, 332-324. Chris Johnson moved from third to first on the start and sped on to his fifth win of the season in a 50-lapper for the B&C Seafood Modifieds. Jimmy Humblet started on the pole, at 84.582 mph, but spun his tires as the green flag waved causing a brief logjam as the field headed toward Turn 1. Johnson dipped to the inside of Humblet and came away with the lead, followed by Joe Scarbrough. Rusty Wood bypassed Humblet for third, while Shawn Balluzzo and Cameron Patrick followed his cue, dropping Humblet to sixth. Balluzzo picked off Wood for third on lap 5 and quickly closed to within a car-length of Scarbrough. The first caution flag appeared on lap 10. Back under green, Johnson fashioned a slim edge. Meanwhile, Balluzzo went to work on Scarbrough, eventually taking over second on lap 12. The shuffle allowed Johnson to add to his advantage. Soon, though, Balluzzo had narrowed the gap. The second yellow flag was unfurled on lap 29. As the race resumed, Johnson and Balluzzo continued their nose-to-tail duel. On lap 31, Balluzzo took an aggressive angle of attack into Turn 1. It didn't pay off and Johnson pulled away by a car-length. Johnson's breather was short-lived, though, as Balluzzo closed back in. The last caution flag flew on lap 41. On the final restart, Johnson forged a two-length lead, only to see Balluzzo halve the deficit. On lap 46, Johnson skittered loose off Turn 4. Balluzzo took a quick peek to the inside, but Johnson fended him off. At the finish, Johnson was the winner by a car-length over Balluzzo. Scarbrough was third, while Patrick and Humblet rounded out the top five. Tommy Nixon regained the lead on the 23rd circuit and motored to his fourth victory in the 25-lap Med Express Urgent Care Super Truck feature. Nixon started on the pole, at 74.458 mph, and paced the first 14 laps. Robbie Davis shared the front row with Nixon, but gave up the second spot to Brad Adams on the start. Davis retook the runner-up position on lap 2 and set off after the leader. The first caution flag appeared on lap 15 when Nixon and Davis tangled in Turn 2. Adams briefly moved out front, but was pulled aside by officials and ordered to the pits for repairs. Adams' misfortune handed the top spot to Rick Potter. With Nixon and Davis making their way from the back of the pack, Potter held sway until lap 23. At the start of lap 23, Nixon bypassed Potter for the lead. Davis tried to follow, but he and Potter locked horns in Turn 2, bringing out the last of the race's two yellow flags. On the final restart, Nixon bolted to a two-length lead as Adams swiped second place from Troy Turnage. At the finish, Nixon was the winner by three lengths over Adams. Turnage was third, while Paul Hogge Sr. was fourth. Davis was fifth in the final rundown, gaining two spots on the white-flag lap. Results LATE MODEL STOCK CARS - 100 laps 1. C.E. Falk 2.
