Motorsports: Balluzzo wins Modified 50 at Langley
Provided by Langley Speedway's Gary Daughtrey:
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA Race Recap Thursday, July 2, 2009 HAMPTON, Va. (July 2) -- After a hiccup on the start, Shawn Balluzzo tracked down Chris Johnson on lap 26, then pulled away for a convincing victory in the Firecracker 50 for the B&C Seafood Modifieds, the headlining event of Thursday evening's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Langley Speedway. Balluzzo set the fast time in qualifying, touring the .395-mile oval at 85.140 mph. Johnson, a four-time race winner, shared the front row with Balluzzo, while A.J. Winstead and Joe Scarbrough made up Row 2. Coming to the green flag, Balluzzo faltered momentarily, allowing Johnson to blast into the lead and leaving Balluzzo in a door-to-door scuffle with Scarbrough. Balluzzo pulled ahead of Scarbrough on lap 2 to gain command of the runner-up position. Johnson, meanwhile, had fashioned a three-length lead. Balluzzo quickly closed in on Johnson's rear bumper and took a look to the leader's inside in Turn 1 on lap 10. Johnson fended off Balluzzo's advance, but couldn't shake him as Balluzzo continued to fill his mirror. After stalking Johnson for 15 more circuits, Balluzzo launched a bid for the top spot, poking his nose underneath Johnson off Turn 4 as they raced toward the crossed flags. Balluzzo pulled ahead in Turns 1 and 2 at the beginning of lap 26 to take over the lead. Just three laps later, he had driven away by almost three lengths, while Scarbrough began to hound Johnson for second. On lap 32, Scarbrough swiped the runner-up position from Johnson, while Balluzzo continued to extend his advantage. At the finish, Balluzzo wrapped up his clinic, winning by a full straightaway over Scarbrough. Johnson was third, followed by Jimmy Humblet and Cameron Patrick. Jammie Goode moved out front on the sixth circuit and stormed to his fifth victory in the 40-lap Old Point National Bank Grand Stock feature. Anthony Kincaid started on the pole, at 78.351 mph, and paced the first five laps. Meanwhile, Goode started on the outside of Row 1, but gave way to Ricky Derrick on the opening lap. On lap 3, Derrick's car skated loose in Turn 2 and Goode slipped underneath. Goode cleared Derrick on lap 4 and immediately went after Kincaid for the top spot. Kincaid held a half-length advantage at the end of lap 5, but gave way on the next circuit. Goode cleared Kincaid on lap 7. Kincaid also lost positions to Mark Claar and Derrick, dropping to fourth. The only caution flag appeared on lap 16. Back under green, Goode quickly fashioned a one-length lead over Claar, then began to ease away. Heading into the final 10 laps, Goode was up by four lengths. Claar narrowed the gap, though, closing to within a car-length on lap 37. That was as close as Claar would get, however, as Goode pulled away to win by three lengths. Claar was second, followed by Kincaid, who regained third place on lap 27. Derrick was fourth and Jimmy Adkins came home in fifth. Adam Florian started on the pole, at 70.916 mph, and led all the way for his second win of the season in the 25-lap EZ Auto of Newport News UCAR feature. Chris Hildebrand shared the front row with Florian and remained on the pole-sitter's flank until lap 2 when Florian gained the upper hand in Turn 1. Allen Dail took advantage of the opening and grabbed second place. On lap 5, Hildebrand slipped back around Dail for the runner-up spot. Florian enjoyed a four-length margin when the race's only caution flag waved on lap 21. Back under green, Florian and Hildebrand bolted from the pack, while third-place Randy Prillaman worked around a lapped car. Over the closing circuits, Florian gradually extended his lead, winning by three lengths. Hildebrand was second, followed by Prillaman, Dail and Robert Rusinyak, who held off Renno Marchetti IV by half a car-length at the line. Casey Sipe took the lead on lap 16 and rolled to his fourth victory in a 30-lapper for the Standard Welding Pro 6 division. Warren Smigo started on the pole, at 79.158 mph, and led the first half of the event with Sipe in tow. On lap 16, Sipe slipped under Smigo at the end of the backstretch and pulled ahead through Turns 3 and 4. Just one lap later, Sipe had already driven away by three lengths. After the only caution flag, at lap 23, Smigo took a run at Sipe. He came up empty and lost the second spot to Joe White. On lap 27, Matt Mullins grabbed third from Smigo, who dropped off the pace and headed to the pits on the following circuit. At the front, Sipe was on cruise control, winning by more than half a straightaway over White. Mullins, Lindsay Bryant and Bobby Hall completed the top five. Starting last in the 12-car field, Mike Ganoe moved to the front on lap 5 and sped on to his second victory in a 25-lap contest for the Larry King Legal Services Enduros. At the finish, Ganoe was a straightaway ahead of second-place Wayne Groome, who led laps 1-4. Jeff Sweeney was third, followed by Brian Smith and Richard Stotler. MODIFIEDS Fin. Pos.
